Light a lighthouse and turn off the US economy? That’s what happened on Black Friday, 1929 on Ocracoke Island, USA

David said NO WAY when I casually mentioned I wanted to take the ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island. But it wasn’t as scary as he had imagined. If you’ve never done it, here’s our experience.

With it’s iconic black and white barber pole design, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse seems to have a dilemma … is it 248 steps as claimed by the National Park Service or 268 as listed online?

Don’t miss the chance to climb the 214 stairs and see the lighthouse that a flock of geese damaged just a couple of weeks before it was first lit in 1872! Oh, and stay off the grass. The sign says “Snake Habitat” but I think they’re just trying to keep us off the grass. Guess what! It worked!
