Cedar Key, year round population 700 …. still the forgotten coast of Florida, but once a major shipping port. There’s a great haunted hotel (thanks Ron!), the Island Hotel, circa 1859 …. complete with ghosts.
What better place to celebrate Halloween? We headed “downtown” just after sunset for a glass of wine hoping to see the ghosts – at least 13 bone fide spirits occupy this old hotel.
The streets were blocked off & every little kiddo on the island was trick-or-treating along main street with all the shops open handing out candy, the police dept cruising the streets in golf carts handing out candy, plus an impressive haunted house staffed by local volunteers – including Batman – and entirely free (donations accepted). The volunteer fire department was the best — smoke machines filled the entire station with smoke, 3 trucks with flashing red lights and volunteer firefighters handing out candy and doing free smoke detector tests. So fun!
I loved the pumpkin display — how about a sea turtle jack-o-lantern?
What did you do for Halloween? The ghosts at the Island Hotel were hiding! Did you see any goblins? Please leave a comment and share! Cheers! Jan
