Cherry Creek State Park: Where to Stay in Denver

Where to stay in Denver to be close to the metro area?

Cherry Creek State Park offers a centrally located state park campground with the convenience of close in camping at 125 sites located close to an 880 acre reservoir.   The park encourages bird watching with special trails as well as boating, jet and water skiing, sailing, fishing, swimming, biking and horseback riding.

Personally we wouldn’t want to stay in a state park located in a metro area except for one thing … our son lives there and we were visiting.  So Cherry Creek it was.  The campgrounds were nice and clean, the showers great and although the privacy was somewhat lacking, the sites were large enough that we never felt we were in a “trailer park”.

The park has full hookups as well as wifi at each campsite (we didn’t test this), laundry and dump stations.

The downside was it was mid-May and SNOWING!  Ugh!  But we’ll go back next time we visit towing our #Lance1685.   It’s easier and quicker access to downtown Denver than camping in the Rocky Mountain National Park (although that might be preferable!).

Anyone with other metro area campgrounds in Denver?  Please leave a comment and let us know.  Although we’re pretty sure we’ll go back to Cherry Creek State Park.  Cheers!

  1. There’s also a great campground on the creek in downtown Golden. It’s within walking distance of downtown and connects to hiking trails in the foothills NW of town .

    • Thanks Rich & Carla! That’s good to know, according to GoogleMaps, it’s exactly 27 minutes via I70 to Billy’s house in Congress Park, metro Denver! And Golden’s a really nice area to be able to walk around! Cheers! Jan
